Gabrielle Giffords, a US congresswoman was shot in the head today along with a number of other people when an assailant opened fire as the Democrat met with constituents in Arizona, congressional officials have stated.

The officials have also said one of the victims passed away soon after the attack and the others were taken away to a nearby hospital. A statement from a hospital spokeswoman claims Ms Giffords is alive but is in a critical condition.

Some of those wounded include Ms Giffords aids who were working with her at the time of the shooting.

Another official has released information claiming that the attack was carried out with an automatic weapon.

The attack occurred as Ms Gifford was meeting constituents outside a shop in Tucson. The FBI is working with the local law enforcement to investigate the attack.

In November Ms Giffords, 40, was re-elected to congress for her third term.

Commenting on the attack, House Speaker John Boehner said: “I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff.

“An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”
