Anwar al-Awlaki, a US-born cleric with links to al-Qa’ida’s Yemen-based wing, has been killed, according to Yemen’s Defence Ministry.

“The terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed along with some of his companions,” it said in a statement. However, no specific details have yet been released.

A Yemen security official has said that Awlaki was killed in a Friday morning air raid which took place in the northern province of al-Jawf close to the Saudi Arabia border. The official also said that a further four men were killed in the raid all were susupected al-Qa’ida members.

It is not immediately known if the raid was carried out by Yemeni forces or was in fact the product of a US drone. A previous attempt to kill Alwaki was carried out by a US drone in May.

No US officials have yet made comment on the situation.

Awlaki is believed to have been involved in a failed attempt to bomb a US-bound in place in 2009.

The US branded Awlaki a ‘global terrorist’ and authorised his capture or killing last year. Thought Yemen was at first reluctant to move against him.

Awlaki has encouraged attacks on the US and was seen as major recruiting tool for al-Qa’ida, drawing in recruits from Western countries.

If Awlaki’s death is confirmed it will be a big blow to the terrorist organisation. He is often seen as one there most gifted English-speaking propagandist drawing in many recruit to their cause.
