Anwar al-Awlaki, a US-born cleric with links to al-Qa’ida’s Yemen-based wing, has been killed, according to Yemen’s Defence Ministry.

“The terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed along with some of his companions,” it said in a statement. However, no specific details have yet been released.

A Yemen security official has said that Awlaki was killed in a Friday morning air raid which took place in the northern province of al-Jawf close to the Saudi Arabia border. The official also said that a further four men were killed in the raid all were susupected al-Qa’ida members.

It is not immediately known if the raid was carried out by Yemeni forces or was in fact the product of a US drone. A previous attempt to kill Alwaki was carried out by a US drone in May. (more…)


Congresswoman shot

Gabrielle Giffords, a US congresswoman was shot in the head today along with a number of other people when an assailant opened fire as the Democrat met with constituents in Arizona, congressional officials have stated.

The officials have also said one of the victims passed away soon after the attack and the others were taken away to a nearby hospital. A statement from a hospital spokeswoman claims Ms Giffords is alive but is in a critical condition. (more…)

Two injured in School Shooting

A gun accidentally discharged at a Los Angeles school yesterday injuring two students, a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesman has said.

This information from District spokesman Robert Alaniz’s has been given by KCBS-TV and differs from information released by police officers who said three people had been injured. (more…)
