A new study has recently revealed that given the choice between printed or electronic books, most children will choose to read electronically.

The study was conducted in a short space of time and with a very small sample group of just 24 families, with children ranging in age between three to six. The study concluded that the majority of children preferred to read on an electronic format.

Carly Shuler, a senior consultant at the Joan Ganz Cooney Centre, the facility responsible for the study, stated; “If we can encourage kids to engage in books through an iPad, that’s a win already.” (more…)


Anwar al-Awlaki, a US-born cleric with links to al-Qa’ida’s Yemen-based wing, has been killed, according to Yemen’s Defence Ministry.

“The terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed along with some of his companions,” it said in a statement. However, no specific details have yet been released.

A Yemen security official has said that Awlaki was killed in a Friday morning air raid which took place in the northern province of al-Jawf close to the Saudi Arabia border. The official also said that a further four men were killed in the raid all were susupected al-Qa’ida members.

It is not immediately known if the raid was carried out by Yemeni forces or was in fact the product of a US drone. A previous attempt to kill Alwaki was carried out by a US drone in May. (more…)

The latest Coventry conversation took place today and we were all treated to a visit from one of the biggest names in British Journalism. The visiting Professor of Journalism and channel 4 news anchor, Jon Snow, visited us today and gave us a great insight into the world of journalism that Snow is right at the for-front of. (more…)

Paul Abbot, a famous TV writer and the driving force behind the hugely successful channel 4 comedy shameless and now its American spin-off. When Paul Abbot was announced as part of the line-up for this years Coventry Conversations there was predictable hubbub of excitement. Even for those who do not watch shameless, like me, it was an exciting prospect to have one of the country’s foremost script writers coming to our very lecture halls to talk to us about what his life is like and how he came to become of the country’s most exciting writers. Who is Andy Kershaw? Before his visit to Coventry University I would have answered that he was a radio DJ, albeit a rather famous and successful one. Now however, I am far more enlightened as to the real Mr Kershaw. (more…)

One of the most frequent issues being raised about the media in this modern age revolves around the representation of women in the various media outlets we as an individual are exposed to on any daily basis.

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in the Media has conducted numerous surveys into this area to show to the public how unbalanced the world of the Media has been and maybe still is in this area of fair and equal representation of people regardless of gender. (more…)

Congresswoman shot

Gabrielle Giffords, a US congresswoman was shot in the head today along with a number of other people when an assailant opened fire as the Democrat met with constituents in Arizona, congressional officials have stated.

The officials have also said one of the victims passed away soon after the attack and the others were taken away to a nearby hospital. A statement from a hospital spokeswoman claims Ms Giffords is alive but is in a critical condition. (more…)
